This day is marked as important and celebrated in countries all around the world, not necessarily on the May 8 as here in the US. It has crossed my mind before that maybe it was a holiday created by the greeting card industry but since it is celebrated in so many cultures in a variety of ways, I have come to believe that's not true. As a small business owner, sure, I'd love to help you choose the perfect gift of pearls for your Mom, but what I really want to achieve is being a part of helping you tell your Mom that she's important and that you love her. I'm selfish enough to enjoy the increased sales but there is more to it than that.
My own Mom is 88 and still works a mean crossword puzzle as well as loves to share jokes (sometimes a bit off color!) with her table mates and friends. Her walker is a sassy purple. Sometimes she says things off the top of her head and makes us all laugh and tease her that she's lost her filter. I tell Mom she is a tough old bird, after all it was her generation that made it through World War II and subsequent skirmishes that have shaped us all. She weathered taking care of my Dad through his fight with terminal cancer in 2001, not to mention the growing pains and health issues of my brothers and myself over the years. I'm 60 years old yet still receive unasked for advice and instructions. But you know what? That is perfectly alright. Mom knows me better than I know myself so she's spot on with the advice-giving. I'm stubborn enough to make a fuss when she does it, but one dreaded day I'll be begging to hear her advice once more. One day I hope to be 88 or older, and will be told by our kids that I've lost my filter. And you know what else? That will be perfectly alright, too. I'll get my jokes ready for the telling. Love you, Mom.
